Bennett Scores Career-First Formula 2 Victory
John Bennett claimed his maiden Formula 2 victory after a dramatic Sprint Race at the Austrian Grand Prix, overtaking Sebastian Montoya on the final lap to secure a memorable win for Trident.
Montoya, who started from pole position, initially lost the lead to Bennett at the start before a first-lap Safety Car was deployed following a multi-car collision involving Joshua Dürksen and Nikola Tsolov. The incident forced Oliver Goethe, Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak and Enzo Fittipaldi into retirement, while Tsolov was able to continue despite dropping down the order.
After the restart, Montoya fought back to reclaim the lead on lap eight, but Bennett remained within striking distance throughout the race. On the final lap, the Briton executed a decisive overtake to seal his first Formula 2 triumph and Trident's breakthrough victory.
Montoya finished second, with Rafael Villagomez completing the podium. Championship leader Gabriele Minì crossed the line in fifth, extending his advantage over Nikola Tsolov to 10 points. The Bulgarian recovered to ninth after the opening-lap incident, narrowly missing out on the points, but will line up third on the grid for Sunday's Feature Race, one place behind Mini.
