Fornaroli Dominates in Budapest
Fornaroli Secures Third Victory of the Season
Leonardo Fornaroli claimed victory in Sunday’s Formula 2 race in Budapest, securing his third win of the season and further extending his lead in the championship standings. Joining him on the podium were Roman Stanek and Jack Crawford.
The race began with a rolling start due to a damp track surface, although drivers opted for slick tyres. Stanek took a confident lead, while intense battles unfolded in the midfield. Several drivers, including Victor Martins, struggled on the Medium compound.
The Virtual Safety Car was deployed twice during the race due to mechanical issues with Amaury Cordeel and Martins. Pit stop strategy proved decisive: Fornaroli pitted later than his rivals and rejoined the track ahead of them, though he received a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
By lap 29, Fornaroli had built a sufficient gap over Stanek and moved into the lead on lap 31. Despite the time penalty, he retained his position and crossed the line first.
Stanek finished second, while Crawford claimed third place — a result that elevated him to second in the drivers' standings, ahead of Richard Verschoor.
The next round of the Formula 2 championship will take place in Monza from 5 to 7 September.
