Leclerc Secures Silverstone Win in Safety Car-Finished British GP

The 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone marked the return of the sprint format for the first time since 2021 and set a new Formula 1 attendance record, with 564,000 spectators attending over the course of the race weekend.Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the weekend's only practice session on Friday before claiming Sprint Qualifying pole position. On Saturday, Kimi Antonelli continued Mercedes' strong form by winning the Sprint and securing pole position for the Grand Prix.

At the start of Sunday's race, Charles Leclerc moved into the lead ahead of Antonelli and Hamilton. Hamilton later received a time penalty, while Leclerc controlled the race despite multiple pit-stop phases and two Virtual Safety Car periods.

The closing stages saw Antonelli lose ground due to technical issues, before Max Verstappen's retirement after becoming stranded in the gravel prompted the deployment of the Safety Car. As a result, the race concluded under caution without a restart.

Leclerc secured his first victory since the 2024 United States Grand Prix, marking the ninth win of his Formula 1 career and Ferrari's 250th victory in the World Championship. George Russell finished second, with Hamilton completing the podium in third. Antonelli ultimately dropped to 15th after a post-race penalty for repeated track limits violations.

Following the race, Carlos Sainz received the unusual penalty of having one lap added to his race result for a Safety Car procedure infringement, dropping him from 12th to 17th in the final classification.
