McLaren’s FormulaE Farewell

McLaren Set to Exit Formula E at End of Current Season

It was officially confirmed today that McLaren Racing will conclude its participation in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the end of the ongoing season. While this decision is expected to lead to some reshuffling within the grid for next year, the overall number of competing teams is anticipated to remain stable.

According to British publication The Race, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown informed McLaren Formula E Team Principal Ian James as early as February of the company's intention to withdraw from the series following the 2025 season — a move that aligns with Formula E’s transition to its fourth-generation (Gen4) race cars. In light of this, James was tasked with identifying new investors and technical partners to secure the team’s long-term future.

That search has reportedly been underway for several months, with formal agreements expected to be finalized by the end of May.

McLaren made its Formula E debut in 2022 by acquiring the structure and resources of the former Mercedes works team. The project has since operated under the NEOM McLaren banner, supported by a Saudi-backed investment consortium.

Despite McLaren’s impending departure, James is said to be optimistic about the team’s prospects. Discussions with one of the championship’s leading powertrain manufacturers are already in progress, and should negotiations conclude successfully, the team is expected to remain on the grid under new ownership and a rebranded identity.
