Pirelli Hits 500 Races in Formula 1

At the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, Pirelli will mark a significant milestone its 500th race in Formula 1 history. This anniversary is symbolic: the Italian company has been involved with the championship since its inception back in 1950 at the first British Grand Prix in Silverstone, where Giuseppe Farina won driving an Alfa Romeo fitted with Pirelli tires. Since then, the brand has participated in races intermittently and returned to Formula 1 on a permanent basis in 2011.

In honor of the anniversary, all cars at Zandvoort will feature a special logo on their tires, with celebrations continuing at Monza, where Pirelli serves as the title sponsor of the Italian Grand Prix.

For the Zandvoort event, softer tire compounds have been selected compared to last year: C2 as Hard, C3 as Medium, and C4 as Soft. This is intended to encourage teams to adopt two-stop strategies, especially since pit lane speed limits have increased to 80 km/h, reducing pit stop time. However, simulations currently suggest that a single pit stop remains the optimal strategy due to the narrow track and limited overtaking opportunities.

Zandvoort is characterized by a high level of downforce and a challenging layout notably the two banked corners, the third and the final turn, with banking angles up to 19 degrees. These present a significant test for tires and suspension. Grip levels will initially be low, partly due to sand brought in by winds from the nearby coast. The weather is typically changeable, with temperatures expected to drop below 20°C.
