Singapore Chance for McLaren’s Crown
In Baku, the McLaren team had the opportunity to secure its tenth Constructors’ Championship in Formula 1 history ahead of schedule. However,Oscar Piastri’s retirement and Lando Norris finishing only seventh prevented the British outfit from sealing the record at this stage.
Nevertheless, McLaren’s chances of winning the championship remain overwhelmingly strong. After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team has 623 points, and with seven races and three sprint events still to come, only Mercedes and Ferrari theoretically remain in contention. Red Bull, meanwhile, has been mathematically eliminated from the title fight, trailing McLaren by 351 points.
The upcoming race in Singapore could prove historic for the Woking-based squad. To clinch the Constructors’ Championship early, McLaren must avoid losing more than 30 points to Mercedes or Ferrari. In practice, this means Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris need to score a combined total of just 13 points equivalent, for example, to finishing sixth and seventh even without challenging for the podium.
Thus, McLaren has the opportunity in Singapore to reinforce its dominance and reclaim the status of Formula 1’s strongest team, securing the championship with several rounds to spare.
