Fornaroli Secures Sprint Victory in Belgium as Dunne Gains Ground in Championship Battle
The Sprint Race of the Belgian round of the Formula 2 Championship concluded with a composed and commanding performance from Leonardo Fornaroli, who claimed his second victory of the season. The event, held at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, proved pivotal in the context of the title race.
Oliver Goethe of MP Motorsport began the race from pole position, joined on the front row by Amory Cordeel of Rodin Motorsport. Notably, their respective teammates — Richard Verschoor and Alex Dunne — remain two of the primary contenders in the ongoing championship battle.
Despite leading the overall standings, Verschoor started from 11th position, while Dunne, Friday’s pole-sitter, lined up 10th for the Sprint due to the top-10 reverse grid format. Both drivers entered the race with a clear objective: to secure as many points as possible.
The race featured multiple incidents, including a collision between Luke Browning and Jack Crawford, which led to Browning’s immediate retirement. Shortly thereafter, Verschoor encountered a mechanical issue that forced him to retire from the race. Yellow flags were briefly shown as marshals cleared debris resulting from these incidents.
Capitalizing on Verschoor’s retirement, Dunne advanced through the field, eventually reaching eighth position and closing in on Gabriele Minì.
At the front, Fornaroli demonstrated strong defensive driving to maintain his lead under pressure and take the chequered flag. Victor Martins (ART Grand Prix) secured second place — marking only his second podium of the season — while Gabriele Minì (Prema Racing) completed the top three.
Fornaroli’s Sprint Race victory earned him a vital 10 points, significantly strengthening his position in the title fight. In contrast, both Verschoor and Crawford failed to score, dealing a setback to their championship aspirations.
