Verschoor Dominates Qatar Sprint
Richard Verschoor secured a confident victory in the Saturday Formula 2 sprint race in Qatar, adding a fourth win to his season tally. Joining him on the podium were Joshua Durksen and Rafael Villagomez.
The opening phase of the race was tense: Verschoor initially lost position after the start, allowing Durksen to take the lead, while Nikola Tsolov climbed to third place by overtaking Villagomez. Several drivers dropped down the order, including Victor Martins, who fell to the lower end of the top ten.
By the fourth lap, Verschoor had regained the lead and began steadily controlling the pace. The field gradually stretched out as the drivers managed their tyre wear and avoided unnecessary risks.
The situation changed following a collision between Laurens van Hoepen and James Wharton the latter ended up in the gravel, prompting the deployment of the safety car.A number of drivers switched to soft tyres during the neutralisation, but Zane Maloney retired soon after due to a wheel that had not been properly secured.
After the restart, Verschoor maintained his lead, although a second safety-car period shortened the race to what was effectively a one-lap sprint to the finish. On the final lap, Villagomez executed an aggressive move to take third place from Tsolov, forcing him off the track.
Verschoor brought the race home in first and, thanks to the bonus point for the fastest lap, moved up to third place in the championship standings. Durksen finished second, earning another podium, while Villagomez matched his best result of the season with third place. Championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli crossed the line in sixth, and his closest rival,Jak Crawford, finished eighth.
