Wolff Admits:Negotiating with Lewis Was Tough

Toto Wolff admitted that contract negotiations with Lewis Hamilton were always a complex and tense process. According to him, discussing terms with someone with whom you share close personal and professional ties almost inevitably leads to difficulties.

“We have been more than just colleagues for many years we have been true friends, sharing everything, supporting each other, and always being on the same wavelength. But as soon as negotiations began, a challenging two-month period would follow, which we both found very difficult to endure,” Wolff explained.

He clarified that even among allies, disagreements can arise during such times, as each party seeks to defend their own interests. To avoid unnecessary stress and maintain a good relationship, they eventually decided to delegate the negotiation process to professional representatives. This approach proved effective: all contentious issues began to be resolved much more quickly literally within a few days.

Wolff also noted that negotiations with drivers, in general, are never easy. This is especially true when dealing with emotional athletes who do not handle contracts on a daily basis and tend to take matters very personally.
